The Whitman String Quartet was founded at Stony Brook University in 2015 and has been performing professionally throughout Long Island since. The ensemble participated in the first class of the Emerson String Quartet Institute, studying standard classical and twentieth century repertoire in coaching and masterclass formats with all five recent members of the acclaimed Emerson String Quartet. The Whitman String Quartet also performs more contemporary and lesser known works for string quartet, string trio, and with colleagues in other instrumentations. They are currently featured throughout Long Island in concert series hosted by All Souls Church in Stony Brook, South Country Library in Brookhaven, Emma Clark Library in Setauket, and more.
In 2024, founding members Dr. Joenne Dumistrascu and Dr. Stephen Gorgone welcomed local professionals Olga Turkina (violin) and Craig Mehler (cello) to the quartet.
